Francine Delany New School for Children makes our own decisions on school closures due to weather events and does not necessarily follow Asheville City School system’s decisions.
Cancelled School Days:
There are two ways to find out if we have cancelled school because of the weather.
1. Watch WLOS-TV or check www.wlos.com for our school name. To sign up for text notifications go to the WLOS website and click on the weather tab then go to text alerts. If our name appears, it will specify whether FDNSC is:
- Open with no buses on icy roads,
- Closed or running on a 2 or 3 hour delay
- A school wide phone message & text message will go out at 7:00 a.m. or as soon as the decision is made.
Delany’s After School program does not operate on days when school is cancelled due to weather.
Delayed Start Days:
The school may also open on a 2 or 3 hour delayed start. Regular transportation will still be provided. If you drive your child to school and we are on a 2 hour delay, please drop them off between 9:45 am and 10:15 am. Drop off time for a 3 hour delay start is between 10:45 am and 11:15 am. Breakfast will not be served.
Weather Events during the School Day:
There are occasions when we need to close school during the school day because of worsening weather that makes the roads dangerous to travel on. You can find out if we are closing early by watching WLOS or going to wlos.com and looking for FDNSC. We also will send out a whole school phone and text message. You are always welcome to pick up your child any time you believe the roads to be hazardous where you are.
If your child’s early dismissal plan is different than his or her regular after-school transportation, please let your child’s teacher know in writing. Again, check with your after-school arrangement to see if it provides service for early dismissal. Your child’s teacher must be aware of what you want your child to do.
